Become a safe, confident driver with our segment 1 driver education services.

You must be at least 14 years and 8 months old before the first day of class. A Segment 1 course includes 24 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and 4 hours of observation. Students will take an exam on the last day of Segment 1 and must score 70% or higher to pass the course.

This course spans six weeks, with three weeks of classroom instruction followed by three weeks of driving instruction. Students must complete two classroom sessions before starting any on-road instruction. Driving instruction will be completed within three weeks of the students' last classroom session.

For students under 18, this is the first step toward obtaining their license. They must also complete a Segment 2 course and pass a road test to get their license.

After completing Segment 1, students must visit the Secretary of State to obtain a Level 1 Learner's License before they can begin driving with a licensed parent or guardian. Students cannot drive with their course certificate of completion. They will receive their certificate of completion after their final driving lesson from their driving instructor, provided all other course requirements have been met.

If you are over 18 and interested in attending a Segment 1 course, which consists of 30 hours, you can participate in person or virtually via Zoom.

You must have a Temporary Instruction Permit (T.I.P.) to begin driving lessons. If you do not already have one, please visit the Secretary of State before starting the behind-the-wheel lessons portion of the course.

Payment in full is required before the start of the course.
